OUTPOST is an artist-led space which is committed to the uncompromising presentation of contemporary art. Its project for Contemporary Art Norwich 2009 consists of two main strands: two solo exhibitions of new work by artists of international standing, and Outhouse, a series of short residencies at an off-site location in the city centre. OUTPOST’s focus throughout CAN09 is on supporting artists through opportunities for production and exchange.
Jamie Shovlin
The Nature of Our Business
Thursday 2 – Tuesday 21 July
Jamie Shovlin’s often controversial work creates fictional narratives and considers systems of classification. Working in a variety of media, Shovlin presents projects that are both thoroughly researched and visually compelling. His most notorious works, Naomi vs Jelish and Lustfaust: A Folk Anthology 1976–1981, explore the tension between truth and fiction. Shovlin sees The Nature of Our Business as the culmination of his five-year exploration of the influence of American popular culture and the politics of protest. He has had solo shows at Riflemaker, London, and Tate Britain’s Art Now.
Matthew Darbyshire Untitled: Furniture Island No. 2
Matthew Darbyshire
Furniture Islands
Sunday 2 – Friday 21 August
Matthew Darbyshire examines contemporary culture and consumerism through his exploration of architecture and design. Through installation, Darbyshire analyses space visually, historically and politically and creates environments that use film, music and interior design.
For OUTPOST, Darbyshire will create a series of furniture islands, each one considering a different consumerist theme. His previous projects include: Blades House, a complete re-creation of a local flat, for Gasworks, London; Palac, a large-scale installation for the 2009 Tate Triennial, and Funhouse, at Hayward Gallery Project Space, which is on display until 12 July.
Outhouse
Wednesday 1 July – Saturday 22 August
OUTPOST’s residency programme will house 21 artists and curators from across the UK and Europe throughout July and August. The residencies offer conditions conducive to realisation and production of new work, and aims to encourage dialogue between visiting artists and OUTPOST members.
Outhouse will act as an information point and meeting place, offering informal engagement with a range of contemporary practice. With different artists arriving each week, Outhouse will be a constant site of actvitiy.
Each Friday, from 6.00pm, work by the artists-in-residence and a selection of artist members will be presented. These evenings will include talks, screenings, performances and participatory events and will provide a regular focal point for sociable discourse.
Artists and curators include: Sovay Berriman, Chloe Brooks, Jenny Campbell, CutUp Collective, Albert Godycki, Dan Griffiths, Emma Hart, Toby Huddlestone, Hannah James, Magdalena Kownacki (F.A.I.T.), Haroon Mirza, Makiko Nagaya, Momus, No Fixed Abode, Plan 9, Ilona Sagar, Daniel Seiple, Waste Disposal Unit and Jantine Wijnja.
As part of Outhouse, Kaavous Clayton will be relaunching The Museum of Exhibitions, an ever-growing archive of exhibition catalogues. It will be accessible by request at Outhouse.
