No Visible Means of Escape: Contemporary Art and Imprisonment

Saturday 18 July – Sunday 4 October

Norwich Castle’s long history as a prison is the inspiration behind this exhibition, which looks at control, punishment and surveillance – themes that have been widely explored in contemporary art. Taking its name from Marc Quinn’s sculpture, No Visible Means of Escape, the show raises questions about the psychology of imprisonment.

An interactive artwork by Spanish artist Dora Garcia confronts the viewer with very real evidence that he or she might be under surveillance, while Christine Borland’s specially commissioned piece is inspired by the castle’s collection of death masks and phrenology. The exhibition tours to Nottingham Castle Museum from 30 October to January 2010.
